Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is
old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Passing the Baton

Do you know what a relay race is? It is a race that has four runners and each one of them runs only a part of the whole race. As each runner finishes their part of the race, they hand off a baton to the next runner - that runner cannot begin the race until the baton is in their hand. You see, none of them runs for themselves. No relay team wins because the second runner ran the fastest! Each runner's time is important! They run as a team. And so, it is not essential that only the second runner is speedy, but it is important that each one runs as fast as they can and passes the baton to the next runner.

We as Christians are also in such a relay race. Before God called us to serve Him, He called other people and gave them a task to do. Many of them died for their faith so that today we could have our Bibles and concordances, for example. These are the men and women, the "heroes of faith," that we want to learn from. They wanted to finish their part of the race so that they could pass on to us the best timing for our run. Because of them, we can now, by the grace of God, run our part and accomplish what God has given us. We are grateful to God for giving us such examples of faith.
